n. 1 a Church council attended by delegated clergy and sometimes laity (see also General Synod). 2 a Presbyterian ecclesiastical court above the presbyteries and subject to the General Assembly. 3 any meeting for debate. Etymology: ME f. LL synodus f. Gk sunodos meeting (as SYN-, hodos way)
